Description
This is a copy of the 1881 Hawaiian five-cent pattern, struck in nickel about 1900. About 1900 copies of the 1881 Hawaiian five-cent pattern were struck from new dies, in thick and thin nickel and in other metals, according to Medcalf and Russell as quoted in sale catalogues, which call them Canadian copies. The copies have no cross on top of the crown; the Paris originals of 1881 have one. PCGS lists it as an 1881 five-cent fantasy strike, and a PCGS sale record for this number describes it as the Canadian copy in nickel on a thick planchet. PCGS number 510974.
