"1883" Hawaiian Fantasy Strike - Dime, Reverse Hub Impression
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This reverse hub impression of the Hawaiian Dime shows the coat of arms design at the dime scale, the smallest denomination to feature the full Hawaiian royal arms. The reverse reads UMI KENETA (Ten Cents) with the value designation, maintaining the bilingual English-Hawaiian approach used across the coinage series. The challenge of rendering the complex Hawaiian coat of arms at the small dime scale was considerable. Every element of the heraldic design had to be proportionally reduced while remaining legible and artistically balanced. The hub impression shows this design at maximum sharpness, before any detail loss from the die-making and striking processes. NGC catalogs this reverse hub impression under number 14691, distinct from the obverse NGC number 14709. The separate NGC catalog numbers for obverse and reverse hub impressions reflect their status as distinct collectible items, each representing a different side of the coin's design and a different piece of the original Mint tooling.
