Description

Originally cataloged as VAM-1F with the classification III2 1 - C3a (I-2, R-6), this 1880 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar variety has been eliminated and reclassified as VAM-35A. Collectors researching this designation should consult VAM-35A for the current attribution. Before reclassification, the variety was documented as showing heavy die wear with roughness on the lower fields, a large die chip in the lower loop of the left 8 in the date, and die chips above the fifth and sixth right stars as well as the second left star. The R-6 rarity rating indicates an estimated population of just 1 to 12 known specimens, making this an extremely scarce variety regardless of its catalog reassignment. The reclassification from VAM-1F to VAM-35A reflects the ongoing refinement of the VAM reference system co-created by Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis, where varieties are periodically consolidated, split, or renumbered as new die state information and additional specimens come to light. Collectors holding coins attributed as VAM-1F should be aware that the current correct designation is VAM-35A, and any future third-party attribution will reflect the updated number.
