1880-O VAM-6 8/7 Spike (Ear Overdate, unclashed, with and without Wreath Gouge) Discovered by Ross Haddix, April 1966. Revised 2010. This coin is a Top 100 Morgan VAM. '''6'''(revised) '''III25 ยท C3a (8/7 Spike) (176) ''' '''Obverse III25โ''' 8 re-punched over 7 in date. A long spike extends from top left side of second 8. Small horizontal spike on right inside of upper loop of second 8 and a checkmark from the remains of the 7 upper serif show on left side of upper loop. '''Reverse C3a โ''' Die gouge on left side of left wreath. Small I O mint mark set slightly right. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: '''Comments:''' # A small "ear" remains at the top left of the last 8 in 1880. This small mark is the remnants of a 7 that was removed to make an 1880 dated die. While many where sure that what became Die pair 2 did not exist, that was Leroy VA's revision on my 1st attempt to correct the listing. What was seen as a 1880-O VAM-6 originally looks to of been a worn 1880-O VAM-6D where the OBV clashing was worn away or not noticed. I sent in a full progression from DMPL un-clashed coins all the way to 1880-O VAM-6C the latest of this die pair. We confirm the existence of what was called 1880-O VAM-6 and then 1880-O VAM-6.2 (now delisted) '''"could not exist"'''.
