Description
The 1879 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1644 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is the quintuple stella, or metric double eagle, of 1879, whose obverse follows the Liberty head of the regular double eagle. It was struck in copper after the period had been added to the die (see J-1642). NGC's census also lists gilt examples of this Judd number. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1844, Adams-Woodin 1573 and Taxay EP1190. Cataloged as PCGS #62023.
