Description
The 1879 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1642 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is the quintuple stella, or metric double eagle, of 1879, whose obverse follows the Liberty head of the regular double eagle. This copper piece was the first struck: the die lacked the period between the 3 and the 5 in the legend, and once the error was seen the period was added and the gold and remaining copper pieces (J-1643, J-1644) were struck. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1842, Adams-Woodin 1574 and Taxay EP1188. Cataloged as PCGS #62021.
