The 1879 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1643 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is the quintuple stella, or metric double eagle, of 1879, whose obverse follows the Liberty head of the regular double eagle. USPatterns.com knows of no test showing whether these were struck in the alloy stated on the coin. It is struck in gold with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1843, Adams-Woodin 1572 and Taxay EP1189. Cataloged as PCGS #62022.
