Description

Discovered by C. Logan McKechnie in October 2004, the 1878-P Morgan Dollar VAM-18A is classified as II/I 2, A2/A1a, die pair 180 (Doubled Date, Clashed Obverse n). Listed under the Reverse of 1879 parent, this variety represents the clashed version of VAM-18. The obverse shows a clashed die with a faint partial incuse lowercase n from the word IN on the reverse appearing next to Liberty's neck. In 1878, dates were part of the master die, so there is no variation in date position across different die pairs from this year. This master-die dating practice means collectors cannot use date placement as a diagnostic for distinguishing 1878 die marriages. The clashed n adjacent to Liberty's neck is the primary pickup point, and its faintness requires careful examination under magnification to confirm.
