1878-P VAM-14

Description

Under the Reverse of 1878 parent, VAM-14 was discovered by LVA in April 1973 and classified I1 2 · A1j — Chip In Ear, Doubled Motto. This die pairing uses the Reverse of 1878 die type, distinguishing it from the companion VAM-14 listing under the Reverse of 1879 parent. The Doubled Motto (class 193) manifests on the A1j reverse as strong hub doubling of ONE, UNITED, STATES, OF, and IN GOD WE TRUST, with slight doubling visible in M, E, I, and A of AMERICA, D, O, and R of DOLLAR, the right star, and wreath elements. Two small added feathers appear on the eagle's right side; one small and one long feather are present on the eagle's left between the leg and wing bottom. Because 1878 dates were part of the master die, no date position variation exists (DPIS not applicable). The die chip in Liberty's ear is the primary obverse marker. The 1878-P Morgan Dollar is a 90% silver Philadelphia Mint issue. Collectors attributing this variety must confirm the reverse die type — Reverse of 1878 — to correctly place the coin in its proper parent context rather than the Reverse of 1879 VAM-14 listing.
