Description

1878-P VAM 14.5 Spiked "A" Discovered by Steve Sabella, June 1979. This coin is a Hot 50 Morgan VAM. '''14.5 I210 A1d (Spiked A) (189) ''' '''Obverse I110''' - Slightly doubled motto letters R-US, UNU, all left stars on left side, and all right stars toward rim. All digits in date doubled with 1 doubled at top of lower crossbar; both 8's doubled at lower inside of lower loop, and 7 doubled on left side of vertical stem. Die overpolished with weak nostril and lower hairlines. '''Reverse A1d''' - Die scratch causing spikes at sides of A in STATES. '''DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. ;Emission Sequence :Obverse: :Reverse: '''Comments: # Quite scarce in circulated grades, unknown uncirculated, with no problem-free uncirculated coins graded as of 2018. # This variety shares the reverse A1d with [[1878-P VAM-6, [[1878-P VAM-7, [[1878-P VAM-14.5, [[1878-P VAM-14.8 and [[1878-P VAM-14.19. # Can be confused with he more common VAM-7, which also has the die gouge through the A in STATES # E on the obverse is doubled to the right. 8s in the date have "sloping" shoulders look. Nose polished open, however some VAM-7 coins also have extensive polishing here and this is not a sure-fire diagnostic.
