1878 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010

Description

The WDDR-010 hub doubling also occurs on the Reverse of 1878 die — the seven tail feathers (7TF) configuration introduced after the Mint revised the eagle's plumage mid-year. This listing documents WDDR-010 under its Reverse of 1878 parent (Wexler Variety ID: 1878 $1 WDDR-010; cross-referenced as VAM 17). The Class II doubling toward the rim is unchanged: USA in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA shows strong spreading, as do the eagle's wing feather tips, IGWT, the beak and tongue, and the olive cluster leaves and branches, with the most pronounced leaf doubling left of the lower branch knot. The Reverse of 1878 die is distinguished by its reduced tail feather count and modified eagle tail anatomy compared to the 8TF reverse. On 90% silver dollars combining a doubled reverse with the Reverse of 1878 configuration, this attribution is collected separately from the 8TF counterpart. The shared WDDO-009 obverse carries the same markers — a short gouge inside the lower loop of the first 8, die scratches behind Liberty's eye, polish lines in the lower hair, and nostril polishing — confirming the die pair across both reverse configurations.
