Description
Proof twenty cent pattern struck in 1876, the Centennial year, as the Philadelphia Exposition showcased American innovation and the Mint continued extensive goloid alloy experiments for metric-weight coinage. This proof striking in silver is part of the twenty-cent piece design exploration, a short-lived denomination introduced in 1875 and discontinued by 1878 due to public confusion with the quarter conducted at the Philadelphia Mint under Chief Engraver William Barber.
Rarity Notes
R-5 to R-7 (Rare to Extremely Rare). Twenty-cent patterns from the denomination's brief existence range from moderately rare to extremely rare.
