Description
Proof three cent pattern struck in 1876, the Centennial year, as the Philadelphia Exposition showcased American innovation and the Mint continued extensive goloid alloy experiments for metric-weight coinage. This proof striking in nickel or copper-nickel is part of the three-cent nickel design exploration conducted at the Philadelphia Mint under Chief Engraver William Barber. The letter suffix indicates a different composition or die state from the base J-1451 variety.
