Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1874 Proof Twenty Cent Pattern - J-1357 is a proof twenty-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. Its obverse is Joseph A. Bailly's seated Liberty, first used on the 1873 trade dollar pattern J-1315, and its reverse shows 20 CENTS inside a laurel wreath; the 2 of 20 and the last A of AMERICA were recut in the die. The only silver example in the literature is the Woodin and Newcomer coin from the 1914 ANS exhibition; USPatterns.com has not seen it, although the number appears in PCGS's population report. It is struck in silver with a plain edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1502, Adams-Woodin 1388 and Taxay EP956. Cataloged as PCGS #61661.
