Description
The 1873 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-1338 is a proof half eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is William Barber's Liberty head facing right with LIBERTY on the coronet, related to his trade dollar J-1287, and its reverse the eagle and shield die of the 1872 Amazonian half eagle J-1240. Haseltine's March 1876 sale gave five struck in copper, and five are known today. NGC's census also lists gilt examples of this Judd number. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1482, Adams-Woodin 1287 and Taxay EP955. Cataloged as PCGS #61626.
