Coin Details
Description
Featuring the Liberty Head with coronet obverse and heraldic eagle reverse of the production $5 gold piece, J-1337 was struck in the standard silver alloy. The half eagle received six varieties in 1873, matching its expanded 1872 program, with a gilt variant replacing the Amazonian gilt concept that had appeared the previous year. America's oldest gold denomination continued to serve as a testing ground for the full range of compositions available to the Mint.
