Description
The 1872 Proof Three Dollar Pattern - J-1237 is a proof three-dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is William Barber's Liberty head facing left, with LIBERTY on the headband and the hair falling behind, and its reverse an eagle standing on a shield like that of his Amazonian silver patterns, which is why the set is also called Amazonian; USPatterns.com notes that it is the only uniform design ever made for all six gold denominations. USPatterns.com reports a single set struck in gold, about a dozen sets in copper (three of them apparently gilt) and three in aluminum. Three examples are known in aluminum; USPatterns.com notes that this is the only pattern design made for the three-dollar piece. It is struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1379, Adams-Woodin 1226 and Taxay EP888. Cataloged as PCGS #61509.
