Description
Struck in aluminum, J-1237 extends the three-dollar design into the exotic lightweight composition. The aluminum three-dollar pattern is among the lightest coins in the entire Trade Dollar era program, barely perceptible in hand. These exotic strikings served primarily as Mint Cabinet curiosities and gifts for distinguished visitors rather than as serious metallurgical experiments for a gold denomination.
Rarity Notes
R-7 to R-8. Very rare, approximately 3-8 examples survive.
