The 1872 Proof Three Dollar Pattern - J-1235 is a proof three-dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is William Barber's Liberty head facing left, with LIBERTY on the headband and the hair falling behind, and its reverse an eagle standing on a shield like that of his Amazonian silver patterns, which is why the set is also called Amazonian; USPatterns.com notes that it is the only uniform design ever made for all six gold denominations. USPatterns.com reports a single set struck in gold, about a dozen sets in copper (three of them apparently gilt) and three in aluminum. The set is unique in gold, and USPatterns.com notes that this is the only pattern design ever made for the three-dollar piece. It is struck in gold with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1377, Adams-Woodin 1224 and Taxay EP886. Cataloged as PCGS #61507.
