1872 Proof Three Dollar Pattern - J-1235
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Featuring the Indian Princess obverse and wreath reverse from the production three-dollar gold piece, J-1235 was struck in the standard silver alloy. The 1872 three-dollar patterns expanded to six varieties from three in 1871, reflecting the inclusion of the Amazonian gilt concept across multiple gold denominations. The three-dollar piece, always an oddity in the American series, served as one of the smaller canvases for testing how the Amazonian design might translate to gold coinage.
