Struck in aluminum, J-1187 extends the 1872 three-cent pattern into the exotic lightweight composition. The continuation of aluminum three-cent experiments into a third consecutive year shows that the metal remained of genuine interest to Mint officials despite its obvious impracticality for commercial coinage. Each year's aluminum strikings added to the growing body of knowledge about how this unusual metal performed under the demands of coin production.
