Description
The copper companion to J-1167, this three-dollar pattern renders the distinctive Indian Princess design in warm base metal. The three-dollar denomination, already considered an oddity in the American coinage system, takes on an even more unusual character when translated from gold to copper. These base-metal strikings of gold-denomination patterns served primarily as Mint Cabinet curiosities and gifts for important visitors rather than serious metallurgical experiments.
