The 1871 Proof Three Dollar Pattern - J-1167 is a proof three-dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 three-dollar gold piece dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. Five or six are known in copper, one of them gilt. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1309 and Adams-Woodin 1086. Cataloged as PCGS #61429.
