Description
Struck in the standard silver alloy, J-1167 features the Indian Princess obverse with feathered headdress and a wreath reverse enclosing the denomination, continuing the design established by James Longacre for the production three-dollar gold piece introduced in 1854. The application of the standard silver composition to a gold denomination tested whether the proposed alloy system could accommodate even the traditionally gold-only denominations, though in practice the three-dollar piece was never a serious candidate for conversion to silver.
