1871 Proof Three Dollar Pattern - J-1169
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Completing the three-dollar group in aluminum, J-1169 renders the Indian Princess obverse and wreath reverse in the exotic lightweight metal. The three-dollar denomination, created to facilitate the purchase of sheets of three-cent stamps, was already an anachronism by 1871, yet it received the same systematic three-metal treatment as every other denomination in the Trade Dollar era program. The piece documents the Mint's commitment to comprehensiveness regardless of a denomination's commercial relevance.
Rarity Notes
