The 1871 Proof Three Cent Pattern - J-1046 is a proof three-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 nickel three-cent dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. Two are confirmed in aluminum, ex Brenner and Brand and ex Woodin and Newcomer. It is struck in aluminum with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1180 and Adams-Woodin 1204. Cataloged as PCGS #61305.
