Description

Opening the 1871 three-cent pattern group, J-1045 features a Liberty Head obverse paired with a Roman numeral III reverse and was struck in the experimental standard silver alloy. The three-cent denomination occupied a unique position in the American series, existing simultaneously in both silver (trime) and copper-nickel versions, making it a natural testing ground for Linderman's unified coinage proposal. This pattern explores how the denomination might appear under the proposed standard silver composition that would theoretically replace both existing versions.
