The 1871 Proof Quarter Eagle Pattern - J-1166 is a proof quarter eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 quarter eagle dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. The nickel piece is ex Woodin (1914 ANS exhibition), Newcomer and Farouk. It is struck in nickel with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1308 and Adams-Woodin 1091. Cataloged as PCGS #61428.
