The 1871 Proof Quarter Eagle Pattern - J-1165 is a proof quarter eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 quarter eagle dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. Two are believed to exist in aluminum, though USPatterns.com knows of only one. It is struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1307 and Adams-Woodin 1090. Cataloged as PCGS #61427.
