The 1871 Proof Quarter Eagle Pattern - J-1164 is a proof quarter eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 quarter eagle dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. Fewer than half a dozen are confirmed in copper, one of them gilt; NGC lists gilt examples separately. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1306 and Adams-Woodin 1089. Cataloged as PCGS #61426.
