The 1871 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1119 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. It was struck from the regular 1871 half dollar dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1871 off-metal strikings from the regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. The single nickel piece is ex Woodin (1914 ANS exhibition), Newcomer and Lohr. It is struck in nickel with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1255.
