Description

Leading the fifteen-variety half dollar group for 1871, J-1105 features a Seated Liberty obverse with IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll and a heraldic eagle reverse displaying HALF DOL. below. Struck in the standard silver alloy, this pattern tested Linderman's proposed composition at the half dollar's substantial weight and diameter. The half dollar was the largest commonly circulating silver coin in the American system, making its performance under the new alloy critically important to the entire standard silver proposal.
