Description
The 1871 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1108 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is James B. Longacre's Indian Princess design, cut into dies by William Barber, who succeeded Longacre after his death in 1869: Liberty, in an Indian headdress, sits facing left with her left hand on a globe bearing a LIBERTY scroll and her right holding a pole topped by a liberty cap, with flags behind her. This die has no stars around the border, and the reverse is the regular reverse of the denomination. USPatterns.com reports that the Mint sold the Longacre designs in sets running from the half dime up to the silver dollar. About half a dozen are known in silver. It is struck in silver with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1244, Adams-Woodin 1136 and Taxay EP824. Cataloged as PCGS #61367.
