Description
The 1871 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-1112 is a proof half dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is James B. Longacre's Indian Princess design, cut into dies by William Barber, who succeeded Longacre after his death in 1869: Liberty, in an Indian headdress, sits facing left with her left hand on a globe bearing a LIBERTY scroll and her right holding a pole topped by a liberty cap, with flags behind her. This die has stars around the border, and the reverse is the Standard Silver reverse of 1870, with STANDARD above the denomination in a wreath of corn, cotton and wheat. USPatterns.com reports that the Mint sold the Longacre designs in sets running from the half dime up to the silver dollar. Just over half a dozen are confirmed in copper. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1248 and Adams-Woodin 1134. Cataloged as PCGS #61371.
