The 1870 Proof Three Dollar Pattern - J-1031 is a proof three-dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. It was struck from the regular 1870 three-dollar gold piece dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1870 off-metal strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. The nickel piece is believed unique, from Woodin's 1914 ANS exhibit, the Newcomer collection and the Farouk sale. It is struck in nickel with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1166 and Adams-Woodin 840. Cataloged as PCGS #61279.
