Using the regular 1870 three-dollar dies, J-1029 was struck in copper. It was struck from the regular 1870 three-dollar gold piece dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1870 off-metal strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. About a half dozen are known in copper. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1164 and Adams-Woodin 838. Cataloged as PCGS #61277.
