Description
An aluminum impression from the regular three dollar dies, J-1030 translates one of the most unusual denominations in American numismatics into one of the most exotic metals available in 1870. The Indian Princess design, originally conceived by Longacre to display a Native American-inspired headdress on a unique gold denomination, takes on an almost spectral quality in lightweight aluminum. Three dollar gold pieces were already uncommon in circulation by 1870, and aluminum off-metal strikings were produced in such tiny quantities that this piece effectively doubles the rarity of an already scarce denomination.
