Description
The 1870 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-807 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. It was struck from the regular 1870 Shield nickel dies. It is struck on thin planchets of 49 to 59 grains, perhaps nickel three-cent stock, so these may be mint errors; about ten are known, and they are not from the over-polished reverse die. It is struck in nickel with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-895 and Adams-Woodin 1056. Cataloged as PCGS #61051.
