The 1870 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-806 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. It was struck from the regular 1870 Shield nickel dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1870 off-metal strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. Two aluminum examples are confirmed; the reverse is the same over-polished die used on J-805 and the 1865 J-418. It is struck in aluminum with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-894 and Adams-Woodin 1055. Cataloged as PCGS #61050.
