Description
The 1870 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-805 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. It was struck from the regular 1870 Shield nickel dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1870 off-metal strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. Four or five are confirmed in copper; the reverse die is the over-polished die of the 1865 J-418, with parts of several letters worn away. It is struck in copper with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-893 and Adams-Woodin 1054. Cataloged as PCGS #61049.
