1870 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-965
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Translating the single-star coronet Liberty Head obverse and STANDARD wreath reverse into copper with a reeded edge, J-965 allowed the Mint to assess how Barber's design transferred to a softer, more malleable metal. Copper strikings from the 1870 Standard Silver series typically exhibit sharper design details than their silver counterparts because copper flows more readily under striking pressure, filling even the finest die recesses. The warm reddish-brown tones of surviving examples provide a dramatic visual contrast to the cool gray of the silver and bright white of the aluminum versions.
Rarity Notes
R-7. Extremely rare, estimated 4-12 examples known.
