Description
The 1870 Proof Half Dime Pattern - J-820 is a proof half dime pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. Its obverse is William Barber's new seated Liberty of 1870, facing left with her right hand on a shield crossed by a LIBERTY scroll, an olive branch in her left hand and a pole and cap behind her, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around and the date below. Its reverse is the regular 1870 half dime die, with HALF DIME in a wreath. USPatterns.com reports that these pieces were sold in complete sets. Three or four are believed known in aluminum. It is struck in aluminum with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-910, Adams-Woodin 1048 and Taxay EP648. Cataloged as PCGS #61064.
