Description
A copper striking of the Seated Liberty obverse with wreath reverse, J-816 demonstrates how the traditional silver half dime design translates into a base metal normally associated with the cent denomination. Copper half dime patterns are inherently anomalous objects, combining a design conceived for silver with a metal whose reddish warmth stands in stark contrast to the cool gray tones of the intended composition. These off-metal strikings were primarily produced for the Mint Cabinet and for distribution to collectors and officials evaluating the Standard Silver proposal.
