The 1870 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1039 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. It was struck from the regular 1870 double eagle dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1870 off-metal strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. Three are believed known in aluminum. It is struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-8. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1174 and Adams-Woodin 829. Cataloged as PCGS #800072.
