Description
The 1870 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1038 is a proof double eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. It was struck from the regular 1870 double eagle dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1870 off-metal strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. At least seven copper examples are known, two of them gilt. NGC's census also lists gilt examples of this number, and PCGS lists them as #81289. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1173 and Adams-Woodin 828. Cataloged as PCGS #61287.
