Description
Continuing the Group 3 survey, J-840 strikes the three-star Liberty cap obverse with the large Standard wreath reverse in copper with a plain edge. The systematic production of each die combination in multiple metals and edges was not unique to the dime denomination — William Barber applied this same rigorous approach across every denomination in the 1870 Standard Silver program, resulting in the most prolific single year for American pattern coinage. The plain-edge copper dime carries the same die marriage as J-837 through J-839 but offers yet another variation in presentation.
