Description
The fourth and final half eagle pattern variety for 1869, this proof piece concludes the Reconstruction-era experimental program for the gold five-dollar denomination. J-778 marks the end of four years of half eagle pattern production spanning 1866-1869 that generated approximately fifteen varieties including suffix variants. The Liberty Head half eagle would continue through 1908 before being replaced by Bela Lyon Pratt's Indian Head design, making these patterns early chapters in the denomination's long design history.
