Description
This proof half eagle pattern from 1869 begins a four-variety series for the gold five-dollar denomination. The half eagle was the most commercially important gold coin for domestic transactions, and its design commanded particular attention in the pattern program. William Barber's four-variety 1869 program slightly reduces the five-variety output of 1868 but maintains substantial experimental activity for the denomination. The Liberty Head design that had served since 1839 continued to provide the foundation for experimentation.
