1869 Proof Half Eagle Pattern - J-776, Gilt
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A gilt version of J-776, struck on a base metal planchet and gold-plated to simulate the gold original. The gilt half eagle pattern provides a visual approximation of the design in gold tones without the expense of using actual gold bullion. This practice allowed the Mint to produce additional specimens for evaluation purposes, expanding the pool of reviewers who could assess the design without increasing the gold commitment.
