Description
The fifth and final eagle pattern variety for 1869, J-783 concludes the most productive year of eagle pattern production in the Reconstruction era. The five-variety program (with two gilt variants) represents William Barber's comprehensive evaluation of design possibilities for the gold ten-dollar denomination. The Liberty Head eagle would continue through 1907 before Augustus Saint-Gaudens' masterful Indian Head design transformed the denomination, but the 1869 patterns document important early steps in the long process of design evolution that eventually produced that iconic coin.
