Description

A proof impression of J-782, the fourth variety in the 1869 eagle pattern series. The later entries in the program represent increasingly refined design concepts, as Barber narrowed the field of candidates based on the evaluation of earlier varieties. The eagle's large gold planchet provided generous space for detailed portrait work and heraldic elements, allowing for particularly sophisticated design solutions.
