1869 Proof Eagle Pattern - J-781, Gilt
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A gilt version of J-781, this proof eagle pattern was struck on a base metal planchet and gold-plated. The gilt format was particularly valuable for eagle patterns because each gold original represented substantial precious metal content. By testing designs on gilt planchets, the Mint could expand its evaluation program without proportionally increasing its gold commitment, making the design review process more economically efficient.
