Description
This proof three dollar gold pattern from 1868 represents continued experimental work on one of the American series' most unusual denominations. The three dollar piece had never achieved the commercial popularity its creators envisioned when they introduced it in 1854, and by 1868 its annual mintage had fallen to minimal levels. Despite this declining relevance, the Mint maintained its pattern program for the denomination, with J-655 documenting potential design improvements or alternative concepts. Longacre's Indian Princess design remained the standard, and these patterns tested refinements to that well-known motif.
